The reaction of nickel and benzyl bromide in dimethylformamide in the presence of oxygen was investigated. Reaction intermediates were studied by range of methods. The kinetic and thermodynamic parameters were determined. The reaction of benzyl bromide with nickel in dimethylformamide in the presence of oxygen occurs at metal surface by Langmuir-Hinshelwood scheme. The benzyl radicals are formed at nickel surface. They couple and isomerize to form 1,2-diphenylethhane and traces of 4.4`-ditolyl. The oxidative dissolution of nickel on air in the system nickel – benzyl bromide – dimethylformamide – oxygen occurs to form benzaldehide, benzyl alcohol and nickel (II) complexes by SET-mechanism. The components of mixture are adsorbed at identical sites of the nickel surface. The reaction mechanism of nickel and benzyl bromide in dimethylformamide in the presence of oxygen is discussed.
