SOURCES OF 40K IN THE SURFACE LAYER OF THE ATMOSPHERE OF ROSTOV-ON-DON

The content and the seasonal behavior of the natural radionuclide 40K in the lower atmosphere of the industrial center (for example, the city of Rostov-on-Don, Russia) have been made. The 40K activity concentration in the atmospheric aerosols was determined by the instrumental gamma spectrometry radionuclide analysis. The content of 40K in atmospheric aerosols of Rostov-on-Don is in the range from 1.8 to 95.5 µBq/m3. The behavior of 40K (average for the period 2002–2011) in the lower atmosphere of the region differs by maximum in summer (June to October) and a minimum in winter. Such seasonal variation is typical for many radionuclides in the atmosphere of different regions in the world. The content of 40K in fractions of a roadside dust and atmospheric aerosols has been evaluated. The contents of 40K in an aerosol and dust roadside is close to mean contents for soils of Rostov region.
